The 1999 North America Taiwan Studies Conference

Organized byThe Preparatory Council for the 1999 North America Taiwan
Studies Conference

Purpose

The Preparatory Council  aims to promote Taiwan studies, to enhance interaction between the academic community in  Taiwan and its counterpart in North America, and to facilitate communication among  graduate students and scholars currently at work in Taiwan studies and related areas.

Among the objectives of the  Preparatory Council are the holding of an annual Taiwan Studies Conference in North  America and the publication of the research papers collected from the annual conferences.

Date

  June 4 - June 7, 1999

Location

  The  University of Wisconsin-Madison

Subject

We encourage participants  from all disciplines to contribute to the study of Taiwan and the  understanding of  the changes in all aspects that are experienced in current Taiwanese society.  Here  are some suggested areas of topics:

  • Literature, history, and cultural studies: languages,  literature, collective memories, cultural beliefs and practices, and religions in Taiwan
  • Political and social changes: democratization, electoral  politics, nationalism, state and society relations, social movements, class relations,  identity, and ethnic relations
  • Economic development: economic restructuring , global  challenges, urban and rural development and public policies
  • Aborigines studies
  • Gender and Sexuality Studies
  • Environmental Studies
  • Education
  • International Relations: national security, Taiwan-China  relations, and Taiwan-U.S. relations

Participants are not confined to the  topics suggested above.  However, as clearly this is a Taiwan studies conference, the  context of the paper should be centered on Taiwan or relate to Taiwan to a great degree.

Manuscripts must be typed (in English  or Chinese), double spaced, and include an abstract (in English) of no more than 300  words, with papers up to 35 pages in length. Manuscripts should follow accepted academic  formats. We recommend The Chicago Manual of Style.
